We like the way the carving on the wooden frame of this piece echos the choppy waves in the picture. Easily from the 1940's, this ship on velvet evokes an earlier sea-faring time. The black "paint" is actually a 3-D mold out of a resin. The frame is ornate and pleasingly worn. The velvet has been professionally stretched into the frame, like canvass would be. The velvet shows some rubbing, but the piece is charming in large part because of its signs of age.
